Discovering Europe’s best family hotel…

TripAdvisor’s had more than a bit of bad publicity recently, with concerns that the review system’s being manipulated by malicious rivals, biased mates of the hotelier, and even travellers trying to force freebies from the owner with the threat of bad feedback. But there’s still no other site which has quite the breadth of feedback, if you read with a huge pinch of salt and don’t treat every comment as gospel.

So when they announce their best family-friendly properties across Europe and Britain, based on the most highly-rated hotels on the site, it’s got to be worth at least a quick look.

The good news is that the winner doesn’t include hours on a plane (unless you live in Inverness), with The Sands Resort Hotel & Spa in Newquay beating off competition from across Europe. It also topped the best of British list, followed by another Cornish gem, Bedruthan Steps hotel, in Mawgan Porth.

Reviewers with young children commented on everything from babylistening services to same-day laundry that wouldn’t blow the entire holiday budget, while others raved about the kids’ club and other child-friendly activities laid on – allowing them to enjoy the spa.

Here’s the other hotels which were singled out:

Europe’s top 10 hotels for families:
1. Sands Resort Hotel & Spa (Cornwall, England)
2. Protur Bonaire Aparthotel (Majorca, Spain)
3. Holiday Village Rhodes (Rhodes, Greece)
4. Sidari Water Park Hotel (Corfu, Greece)
5. Aparthotel Playa Mar (Majorca, Spain)
6. Alfagar II Aparthotel (Albufeira, Portugal)
7. Aquafantasy Aquapark Hotel & SPA (Aegean Coast, Turkey)
8. Coma Gran Aparthotel (Majorca, Spain)
9. Aparthotel Golden Avenida Suites (Costa Dorada, Spain)
10. Apartamentos Cala d’Or Playa (Majorca, Spain)

Britain’s top 10 hotels for families:
1. Sands Resort Hotel & Spa  (Newquay, Cornwall)
2. Bedruthan Steps Hotel (Mawgan Porth, Cornwall)
3. Doric Hotel (Blackpool, Lancashire)
4. Auchrannie Spa Resort (Brodick, Isle of Arann)
5. Merton Hotel (St. Saviour, Jersey)
6. Collingham Serviced Apartments (London)
7. Holyrood Aparthotel (Edinburgh)
8. The Colwyn Hotel (Blackpool, Lancashire)
9. Novotel London Tower Bridge (London)
10. The Gables Hotel (Gretna Green, Dumfries and Galloway)

  1. Cathy I’d add KinderHotels in Austria/Germany – amazed they aren’t there as they are fantastic and in the UK any hotel belonging to the Luxury Family Hotel Group – actually just noticed Bedruthan Steps is there but their others are really good too.

    • I guess that’s one of the drawbacks of it being based on TripAdvisor rankings only – if they don’t get reviews on the site (or not enough), it doesn’t make the list. Good tips though!
