The car seat with attitude

The ultimate piece of travel equipment if you have a baby? It’s got to be a car seat. Apart from anything, it’s a legal requirement if you’re planning to use a car (which, if you have a baby, you probably are). So it’s only a matter of time before someone decided to take it from ‘safe’ to ‘probably able to survive anything you can throw at it’.

I’m all for safety. Given the potential injuries even a crash at relatively low speeds can cause, there’s no question you need to be able to trust the seat you’re strapping your child into. I’d just never considered  one that’s made of bulletproof Kevlar which also has a protective cocoon in case of a fire.

The Carkoon, which has just been unveiled by Brighton-based Cool Technologies, has a rigid airbag that folds out on impact to protect the baby in a fireproof bubble (and still giving the child 20 minutes of air). Some models will apparently even have a device to transmit a signal to emergency services to let them know the accident involves a young child.

It’s not on the market yet, as the new airbag design needs to undergo more testing, although it’s expected to be on sale in 2013. Oh, and it’s going to cost around £499…

But is it a price worth paying, to keep your child safe? Hmmm.
